Tripadvisor is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our dynamic Data Platform team, which serves as the engineering backbone of our data ecosystem. This role involves designing, building, and maintaining the data infrastructure that supports our global travel platform. The ideal candidate will combine strong software engineering skills with deep data engineering expertise to create reliable data pipelines and scalable solutions for millions of travelers.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the entire lifecycle of critical data pipelines, including defining service level agreements (SLAs), implementing performance metrics, monitoring, alerting, and leading incident response and root-cause analysis.
• Create scalable and reusable data models and curated datasets for various analytics, data science, CRM, and machine learning applications across the organization.
• Design, construct, and maintain robust ETL/ELT data pipelines that handle terabyte- to petabyte-scale data across platforms like Snowflake and BigQuery.
• Develop and maintain both streaming and batch systems that support real-time and analytical workloads, while simplifying legacy ingestion processes.
• Promote warehouse standardization and reduce technical debt as the organization consolidates its data warehousing efforts.
• Ensure enterprise data integrity, validation, documentation, and governance practices are implemented and maintained as standard procedures.
• Utilize AI to enhance team productivity, including creating reusable skills for pipeline migrations and upgrades.
• Establish and refine engineering standards, patterns, and best practices for data modeling, pipeline design, testing, and observability.
• Write and review production-level Java and Python code across the data platform stack, including data ingestion, event processing, REST services, and internal tools.
• Architect and scale systems for streaming and batch processing using technologies like Flink, Spark, and Kafka.
• Take ownership of all software engineering aspects, including design, implementation, quality assurance, and maintenance, with a focus on continuous integration and deployment.
• Design, manage, and enhance cloud infrastructure on AWS, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Lead large-scale initiatives from inception to completion, including technical specifications, design reviews, project planning, and cross-team delivery.
• Maintain high standards of code and data quality through leadership in design and code reviews, and mentor other engineers within the team.
• Translate complex, cross-organizational data challenges into clear, standardized solutions and communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders.
• Work independently in a fast-paced, globally distributed environment, with a commitment to continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in data engineering or software development within a commercial environment, demonstrating technical leadership on medium to large projects.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience in taking significant projects from design to production, with increasing responsibility for technical direction.
• Extensive experience in designing and implementing complex ETL/ELT processes from concept to production, including SLAs and performance monitoring.
• Strong background in data design and modeling, with advanced SQL skills for managing large and complex datasets.
• In-depth knowledge of big data technologies and cloud data warehouses, such as Snowflake, BigQuery, and Hadoop/Hive, at scale.
• Experience in building reusable frameworks or platforms that support other engineers, rather than just point solutions.
• Proficient in both Python and Java for production systems.
• Expertise in systems performance and tuning, with an understanding of how architectural choices impact scalability and costs.
• Familiarity with building REST services and working with event queue systems.
• Knowledge of Linux and cloud infrastructure design on AWS or similar platforms.
• Ability to operate autonomously in loosely defined problem spaces, simplifying complex issues into practical solutions and effectively prioritizing tasks.
• Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, and enthusiasm for tackling challenging problems.
• Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership.
