As a Research Scientist at DeepMind, you will engage in cutting-edge research focused on verified code generation. Your role will involve designing and implementing AI systems that produce formal proofs of code correctness, safety, and security using the Lean proof assistant. You will also formalize programming language semantics in Lean to enable verified static analysis of real-world codebases.
Your responsibilities will include prototyping and evaluating novel techniques that combine Large Language Models (LLMs) with formal verification for automated code analysis and generation. You will build tools, libraries, and infrastructure to scale formal verification to large codebases, and collaborate with researchers and engineers across AI, security, and compiler infrastructure teams.
To qualify for this position, you should possess a PhD in computer science, programming languages, formal methods, software engineering, or a related technical field, or have equivalent practical experience. You must have at least 4 years of experience in programming language semantics, static analysis, abstract interpretation, software verification, or interactive theorem-proving, along with 1 year of experience with a proof assistant such as Lean, Coq, or Isabelle.
Preferred qualifications include 2 years of experience with compiler infrastructure (LLVM or GCC), 1 year of experience with large language models or machine learning for code tasks, and experience in memory safety analysis or systems security. A publication record in top formal methods and software security venues is also desirable.
This role offers a competitive salary range of $207,000 – $301,000 (USD), a 20% bonus target, equity options, and a comprehensive benefits package. The working pattern is hybrid, allowing for flexibility in your work location.
