Applications are invited for the position of Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in Diabetes at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. This role is a substantive position based within the paediatric department, requiring the successful candidate to work across both Sunderland and South Tyneside localities. The Trust is known for providing a comprehensive range of care to children and young people, achieving some of the best outcomes in the country despite operating in an area of significant deprivation.
The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including four diabetes consultants, eight diabetes specialist nurses, two healthcare assistants, four administrative staff, three dietitians, and one psychological therapist. The role involves managing a named patient workload while also providing care and support to other patients as needed. The postholder will be expected to provide clinical support to the wider paediatric diabetes multidisciplinary team (MDT), participate in monthly MDT meetings, and engage in departmental audits and quality improvement projects.
Additional responsibilities include attending regular weekly paediatric consultant meetings and participating in out-of-hours cover for general paediatrics as part of the paediatric rota. The successful candidate will also contribute to the strategic development of the service in alignment with local, regional, and national priorities. Final job plans will be agreed upon in discussion with the Clinical Director and will be subject to annual review.
To be eligible for this position, applicants must possess a primary medical qualification, full GMC registration, and be on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for entry within six months of the interview date. A CCT in paediatrics or equivalent is required, along with membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to independently manage patients and communicate effectively with both patients and team members. Experience in paediatric diabetes, including training in insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring, is essential.
The Trust offers a competitive salary ranging from £113,565 to £150,569 per year, along with access to high-quality education and training opportunities, support for career progression, and flexible working arrangements. Additional benefits include access to a fitness centre, libraries at both hospital sites, chaplaincy support, and assistance from a care coordinator for childcare arrangements.
