The rise of c# continues …

Every Developer or at-least most of them feel that the language that they work is the best . But it might also happen that some developer start complaining the language / framework for some reasons and and end up saying other language might be good .

With so many languages / development environments out there , does the ranking of the languages really matter for a developer ?

TIOBE , a Programming Community index , which is an indicator of the popularity of programming languages has announced its March Index which states C# is getting close to C++ now  .

The site states that most of the new code developed inside Visual Studio in written in C# instead of VB.NET or VC++ . As a result, C# is gradually becoming Microsoft’s language number one. Dont you agree upon this ? I definitely do agree . In the long run C# seems to be the only serious candidate to compete with Java.

Although , i am a Developer with c# and VB.NET knowledge , i end up writing a C# code even for a sample applications and i feel this is the case with most of other developers , but a pure VB.NET developer may somewhat disagree upon this . But then whet about VB.NET ? . Well , this is a great language too and there are so many Developments still made for the language which makes C# and VB.NET dependable 🙂

Every Developer or atleast most of them feel that the language that they work is the best . But it might also happen that some developer start complaining the language / framework

Coming back to the ranking based on the languages , c# which was ranked No. 6 in March 2010 is now ranked No .4 which is a clear indication that the language has grown much better with the new framework and its growth looks promising too .

The other languages that were winners this monthe were Objective-C , Lua and Groovy .

I have heard of Objective-C and Groovy , but what about lua ? . This is what happens with a pure .NET / Windows Development guy like me talking about Windows Development and missing out on knowing the other world 🙁

Lua was created in 1993 by Roberto Ierusalimschy, Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo, and Waldemar Celes .Lua is a powerful, fast, lightweight, embeddable scripting language and is used in

  • Industrial applications like Adobe’s Photoshop Lightroom
  • embedded systems ( Ginga middleware for digital TV in Brazil )
  • Games (World of Warcraft).

Lua is currently the leading scripting language in games.

Nice to hear about the language with this post.

The languages that lost some ground this month were PHP and Python .

The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, YouTube and Baidu are used to calculate the ratings.

So does this ranking really matter ? Well , it depends . But atleast for some fun , you might end up visiting the rank site next time to see is your Programming Language has performed better 🙂

At first C# looked like it is just Java-ripoff in the year 2003, but since then it has showed some unique characteristics, which is good.
Both of the languages scale well from tiny utilities to huge applications.
In order to run apps created with those languages, you need to download massive standard libraries ( jre, .NET framework ) and that can be a big turn-off for some developers.
The reason I prefer Java is that it is widely available for different platforms.
However there is a rising star on the field of scripting and that is javascript ( and I am not talking about web browser scripting ). Just watch how it rushes it’s way to #1 scripting language in few years.
