What is an IP address?

IP is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol. This protocol, along with many others such as HTTP, TCP, UDP, and so on, is in charge of establishing communications in the majority of our networks.

There are two types of IP: Public IP and private IP.

Both public and private IP addresses are constructed in four-digit blocks. Each block consists of a number ranging from 0 to 255, separated by a period (“.”). A public IP address, for example, could be 21.22.10.23, and a private IP address, 192.168.0.1.

What is a public IP address?

A public IP address is the identifier assigned by your internet service provider to be recognised on the Internet.

Every time you restart your router or occasionally, your ISP (internet service provider) will often rotate these IP addresses. These are what are referred to as dynamic IP addresses.

You can get a static IP or Fixed IP address once you contact your ISP and purchase it through them.

What is a private IP address?

A private IP address is identical to a public IP address, with the exception that it is fixed for each device and cannot be accessed via the Internet.

IP Address Range

Private IP addresses, in contrast to public ones, are given a range based on the kind of network we will see next.

  • Class A range : 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255.
    • These are the IP address ranges that are used by massive networks, such as those of global corporations.
  • Class B range : 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255.
    • These are the IP address ranges utilised by medium-sized networks, like universities or other institutions of a comparable size.
  • Class C range : 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255.
    • These are the IP address ranges that 99% of people use. Small home networks are the only ones that can use them.

What are IPv4 and IPv6 IP addresses?

Since there are nearly no IPv4 addresses left, IPv6 addresses are a new sort of protocol that take their place. IPv4 addresses are what we have been using up to this point.

IPv4 only provides 4,294,967,296 (2 32 ) , or just under 4.3 billion, addresses.
