We are seeking experienced children’s nurses to join our Children’s Short Stay Unit (CSSU) at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This role is both rewarding and demanding, requiring a genuine passion for delivering high-quality care to children and their families. Our team is dedicated to providing excellent patient care across a wide range of conditions.

The CSSU is a 12-bedded unit that operates 24/7, accepting admissions from the Children’s Emergency Department for stays of up to 24 hours. We care for children and young people aged 0-17 years who present with acute illnesses, injuries, and mental health concerns. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates closely with the Children’s ED to ensure the highest standards of care.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for pediatric patients.
  • Assist in the management and organization of the clinical area.
  • Coordinate and prioritize the daily activities of the nursing team.
  • Supervise and contribute to the education and development of nursing staff.
  • Engage in service development and implement new practices.
  • Ensure the effective use of clinical, physical, and financial resources.
  • Monitor health, safety, and security for all individuals in the unit.
  • Act as a professional role model for staff and patients.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Ward/Unit Manager and multidisciplinary team.
  • Adhere to the UHL Uniform policy and maintain professionalism.
  • Deputize for the Ward/Unit Manager or Deputy as required.

Requirements

  • Current UK NMC registration as a Registered Nurse – Children’s.
  • Experience in supporting learners and supervising their progress.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Willingness to undertake new clinical practices and training.
  • Commitment to treating individuals with dignity and respect.
  • Understanding of high-quality clinical nursing care and NHS strategies.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse patient populations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and accurate record-keeping abilities.
  • Basic IT knowledge.
