Job Role Tools and Compilers Research and Development
Qualifications Bachelor’s
Category General Jobs
Job Type Full Time

We are thrilled to offer research internships within our Tools and Compilers group at Jane Street. This opportunity is ideal for PhD and master’s students who possess exceptional research experience in programming languages, compilers, verification, and similar domains.

The Compilers team at Jane Street is dedicated to enhancing OCaml, which serves as a crucial foundation for our expanding technology stack. Our work involves various aspects of the OCaml compiler, with the goal of simplifying the process for developers to articulate their ideas, improving the performance of the generated code, and making the OCaml compiler more efficient and user-friendly.

Throughout the years, we have made significant advancements, such as extending the type system to support innovative language features, completely re-engineering the optimizer, and implementing feedback-directed optimization. Additionally, we enhance the surrounding toolchain by developing tools for profiling, debugging, documentation, and automation of builds. A large portion of our work is open-source, and we strive to contribute as much as possible to the mainstream OCaml compiler.

During your internship, you will collaborate closely with your mentors on a designated project for about 10-12 weeks. This experience will allow you to learn how we utilize OCaml in our daily operations and familiarize yourself with the libraries and tools that are fundamental to our internal systems. You will gain a deeper understanding of the diverse challenges we tackle regularly and have the opportunity to experiment with new concepts while applying state-of-the-art research to a large, actively maintained production codebase. Projects may include areas such as:

  • Type systems that track locality and uniqueness
  • Formal verification of OCaml programs
  • New language features for systems programming
  • Compiler testing and validation

Moreover, you will have access to various educational resources, both physical and virtual, and will be able to attend guest speaker sessions and social events, providing a glimpse into what it would be like to work at Jane Street full-time.

We are looking for candidates who are PhD or master’s students with outstanding research experience in relevant fields. While we do not expect you to have a background in finance, OCaml, or functional programming, it is essential to include a list of your peer-reviewed publications in your resume. Jane Street is committed to being an Equal Opportunity Employer.
