An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and motivated Senior Clinical Coders to join the highly experienced and friendly Clinical Coding team at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust in Cornwall. This role allows for engagement with clinicians, validation of clinical coding, and the chance to become the lead coder for designated specialties. With the upcoming implementation of an Electronic Patient Record, the successful candidate will have the option to work remotely or in a hybrid model.

The Clinical Coding Team is responsible for the extraction and translation of documented clinical information pertaining to inpatient admissions into diagnosis (ICD-10) and procedural (OPCS 4) clinical codes. This data is essential for various key functions within the Trust, including business planning and reporting, and it underpins the income received through the National Tariff Payment Scheme. As a Senior Clinical Coder, you will ensure that clinical documentation is fit for coding purposes and that data quality is maintained.

Main Duties

  • Lead clinical coding for designated specialties, ensuring accurate and high-quality coding for admitted patient activity.
  • Engage with clinicians to validate clinical coding and ensure clinical documentation is suitable for coding purposes.
  • Extract and translate clinical information into diagnosis (ICD-10) and procedural (OPCS 4) codes.
  • Support the Clinical Coding Team in maintaining data quality and compliance with national coding standards.
  • Participate in ongoing education sessions to enhance coding skills and knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) and completion of a Clinical Coding Refresher Course within the last three years.
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths, English, and Science, or equivalent qualifications.

Experience

  • Significant experience working in a clinical coding department and participating in complex coding audits.
  • Experience with hospital-based computer systems and Windows packages.

Skills

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Methodical, accurate, and numerate with strong problem-solving abilities.
