Machine Learning Researcher Overview

We are seeking intelligent and inquisitive individuals to join our expanding Machine Learning team at Jane Street. In this role, you will be responsible for developing deep learning models that enhance our trading strategies, leveraging our powerful computing cluster equipped with tens of thousands of high-end GPUs.

The trading environment presents unique challenges, including large models and nonstationary datasets within a competitive multi-agent setting. As part of our team, you will work closely with researchers, engineers, and traders to train models, design systems, and implement trading strategies. Your daily tasks may involve delving into market data, fine-tuning hyperparameters, troubleshooting distributed training performance, and analyzing how our models perform in production.

Your expertise in the machine learning landscape will be crucial as you explore various approaches, including large language models, image models, reinforcement learning agents, recommendation systems, and classical machine learning techniques. You will also play a key role in training models for our next-generation deep learning trading strategies and building the foundational knowledge necessary to navigate new markets and scenarios.

In addition to technical responsibilities, you will be involved in hiring new team members, attending conferences, and sharing your knowledge with colleagues, all of which are considered vital aspects of the role.

About You

If you have never considered a career in finance, you are not alone; many of our team members were in the same position before joining us. We value curiosity and a passion for solving complex problems. While there is no specific set of skills required, we are looking for candidates who possess:

• Practical experience in empirical machine learning problems.
• The ability to apply logical and mathematical reasoning to various challenges.
• A strong interest in state-of-the-art research across multiple machine learning domains.
• Fluency with a diverse array of models and techniques.
• Hands-on coding skills to quickly implement and iterate on ideas using Python and your preferred machine learning framework.
• A willingness to ask questions, learn from mistakes, and embrace new concepts.
• Fluency in English.
