How to open .chm files in Windows 7?

Sometimes when you open a .CHM file in windows 7, you might get an error “Navigation to the webpage was cancelled”.

First thing I felt when I saw the error was “Is the .chm file corrupted”? But the reality was different and in fact the fix for this issue was pretty simple and small.

The .chm file was copied from a different computer and because of some security reasons, the .chm file was blocked. I just had to unblock the .chm file to get it to work.

How to open .chm files in Windows 7?

1. Right click on the .chm file in the file explorer and click “Properties”.

2. In the “General” tab of the “Properties dialog”, you will see the “unblock” button. Click it and then click “OK” button.

3. You are done. The .chm file is unblocked and the error “Navigation to the webpage was cancelled” will not show up now 🙂

If you are directly opening the file from the network share or mapped drive, you might see the same issue. Simply copy the file locally and the open the .chm file.
