Adding Footnotes:
- Open your document in Microsoft Word.
- Place your cursor where you want to insert a footnote. Typically, this is at the end of the sentence or word you want to add a note for.
- Go to the “References” tab in the Word ribbon (menu bar).
- In the “Footnotes” group, you will see an icon with a small superscript number (usually “1”). Click on this icon.
- A superscript number 1 will appear at the cursor position, and the cursor will move to the bottom of the page (or the end of the document, depending on your settings) where you can type your footnote content.
- Type the content of your footnote.
- To return to your main text, simply click in the main text area, and Word will automatically format and number your footnotes correctly.
Adding Endnotes:
- Open your document in Microsoft Word.
- Go to the “References” tab in the Word ribbon (menu bar).
- In the “Footnotes” group, click the small arrow in the corner to open the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
- In the dialog box, you will see options for “Footnotes” and “Endnotes.” Select “Endnotes.”
- Choose whether you want the endnotes to appear at the end of the document or at the end of each section. You can also select the format (e.g., Roman numerals, Arabic numerals) for numbering your endnotes.
- Click the “Insert” button.
- Word will insert an endnote number in your text and take you to the end of the document (or section) where you can type your endnote content.
- Type the content of your endnote.
- To return to your main text, click in the main text area, and Word will automatically format and number your endnotes correctly.
